Minutes of the Board Meeting 4/25/12
Roll: D. Conklin (Pres), J. Koop (V Pres) , E. Walsh, C. Steele (Secty), P McIlwee (Tres), B Hammons, E Latour, M York, R Brehm, S Zuber, K Redmond, C Redmond.
Meeting called to order at 7:05 by Pres Conklin.
Dave Conklin established a concensus that fishing has been quite excellent recently.
Mike York reported on coordination efforts with NDOW to combine a fishout at Hobart Lake with a work party to replace the posts on an NDOW marquee. He has been communicating with Kim Toulouse and set requirements for participation. To participate, a volunteer must be registered on the NDOW volunteer website. Gates will be opened at Lakeview to enter and exit with the NDOW staff and vehicles. NDOW will help volunteers to transport watercraft to the lake. If you are interested, see Mike at the next meeting. The work party/fishout is scheduled for July 14th.
Stan Zuber’s Beginning Fly Fishing Class has been scheduled. The course begins June 4th at 7:00 pm. See schedule below for the nights and subjects for the balance of the class. Please note that the club website has considerable information, and the new corkboard is a great place to post info about your fishing experience or upcoming events. All members are welcome to read the corkboard and post their notes.
Koop has purchased a digital video camera for the club. The board directed Koop to investigate the cost of acquiring a case and tripod for the camera. Koop should report back at the next board meeting.
Next Meeting - The presentation at the next meeting will be by our own Stan Zuber, who will demonstrate the tying of some small flies. Look for a useful dry fly and nymph to be demonstrated.
Our next Fishout is Saturday May19th, at Frenchmans Reservoir in California. A few members will go up Thursday to the Cottonwood Springs campground, and claim the Group Use campsite. As fishing has been great, reservations for campsites may be needed. Please check into reservations if you plan to camp early. Any person is welcome to join in the early trip.
Frenchman’s has been fishing very well with numerous double digit days recorded recently. Two CFFC members recently combined for more than 60 fish, and these are healthy, fat and strong fish. Look for fish between 10 and 18 inches.
Reminder- Bill Hammons is offering to show anyone his effective techniques for float tube fishing. The clinic will be this Saturday, 4/29, on Hinkson Slough. Contact Bill for directions or information 887-1027. Here’s an opportunity to learn from one of our highly successful members!
There was a brief discussion about whether more money could be raised at our annual banquet if we hired a hall and catered the food. Most expressed satisfaction with Gold Dust West, and more research will need to happen to find out what would be club responsibility if we made this change.

Roll: D. Conklin(Pres), J. Koop (V Pres), E. Walsh (ex Treas), C. Steele (Secty), P. McIlwee (Treas), B. Hammons, E. Latour, M. York, R. Brehm
The meeting was primarily focused on assigning a schedule for fishouts, and beginning the process of choosing speakers. Craig pointed out that we may get more interest from the public if notice of fishouts and speakers can be included in the Nevada Appeal. Work assigning speakers and fishouts will continue. See the calendar below for the fishout schedule.
Several highly qualified speakers were considered. More discussion will be held to schedule them.
CFFC Nevada Trout Challenge...Fishing for Pyramid Lake Cutthroat trout may be too much of a specialized effort. Special gear etc. So the board decided to make certificates available to any member who catches 5 of the 6 "native" fish. So a member needs 5 out of cutthroat, rainbow, tiger, bowcut, brown, or brook trout in order to get the certificate. (Remember, each must come from a different body of water.)
The board directed Koop to investigate the cost of acquiring a digital movie camera to enable big screen viewing of fly tying demos. Koop should report back at the next board meeting.

January 2012

Minutes of the Board Meeting 1/25/12
Roll: D. Conklin (Pres), J. Koop (V Pres) , E. Walsh (ex Treas), C. Steele (Secty), B. Hammons, E Latour, S Zuber
Dave opened the meeting with discussion about our meeting location and schedule. Wednesday Feb 1 our meeting will be held at the CC Sheriff’s Office. Starting in March, our following meetings will be at the Stewart Street Fire Station.
Our July meeting and BBQ will once again be held at Dave Conklin’s home, this time on Tuesday, July 3rd (so as to avoid conflicts). Our October 31 board meeting may be moved.
The Banquet this year will probably be moved to the second Saturday in November (Nov 10). We want to have our November regular meeting (Nov 7) before the banquet so we can make final preparations for the event.
Dave asked if board members were interested in purchasing “Trout and Salmon of North America” by Bobert Behne. The cost was approx $250 for this book. The board declined.
Ernie and Ed moved to donate $100 to Nature Conservancy specifically for the Truckee River. Motion was approved unanimously.
Our presentation for this coming meeting (February 1) will be by Kris Urquhart of NDOW. Kris will speak on the management of the Mason Valley Wildlife Area. Perhaps he will have some hints on fishing Hinkson on 2/18 for our fishout?
Flyfle! Don’t forget to bring two of your favorite flies so you can participate in our Flyfle. Participants will get to draw for the whole collection. There are some fine, very effective, flies each month.
Watch our website for changes as new webmasters assume their duties. (Though thanks MJ for the new cork board on our site now. That is very slick!)
Stan reported that the Trout in the Classroom projects will receive their trout eggs on February 8th.
Stan’s fly tying class schedule is now available. It is in another attachment transmitted with this newsletter. A summary is in our calendar below.
Bill Hammons has volunteered to help any new float tuber or pontoon users at the Hinkson Fishout with instructions on how to fish from their boats. Contact Bill at the meeting to discuss time and place.
Bill Hammons and Craig Steele are now also volunteering at the Reel Recovery camp in July. About 10-12 men with cancer will participate in a great fishing retreat. If you have questions about this very worthwhile camp, ask Koop, Bill or Craig.

Minutes of the Board Meeting 12/28/11
Roll: D. Conklin (Pres), J. Koop (V Pres) , E. Walsh (ex Treas), C. Steele (Secty), B. Hammons, P. McIlwee (Treas), K. Redmond, M. York.
Dave started the meeting asking for suggestions for new member retention. Several ideas to help new members become comfortable and engaged in club activities were discussed. Ernie reported that there are probably 10-15 members who have not yet renewed their memberships for 2012. Those of you who have not yet paid and who want to remain in the CFFC, please send your membership checks ($20 individual, $25 Family) to the address above.
Web Site Manager... After many years of club service managing our CFFC website, MJ VanEmerik has resigned. Transition to new managers will start soon. Presently Debbie Conklin and Lisa Koop are considering the post.
The speaker for Wed’s meeting will be Bill Hammons, who will describe the process to earn the California Heritage Trout Award. He may also describe a potential CFFC Nevada Heritage Trout Award for our qualifying members.
The speaker for the February meeting will be Pat Kelly, who has recently been promoted to State Hatcheries Manager, but who recently was manager of the Mason Valley NDOW District. Pat will provide us the history of the Mason Valley Wildlife Refuge.
Fishouts were discussed again, with more suggestions for ripe fisheries each month. Candidates for new fishouts include: Knott Creek Reservoir, Rye Patch, Topaz, Lahontan, Bridgeport Reservoir, Rosacci Ranch, Independence Lake, North Pond and Kirman Reservoir. Traditional fishout venues (i.e. Pyramid, Indian Creek, Hinkson, etc.) may be rearranged to place them on the calendar at times when they produce better. More moving water fisheries may be considered. Let any board member know if you have a suggestion for a water we should try together.
Stay tuned on our meeting location. January and February will be our normal Wednesdays at the sheriff’s office. From March on, however, the first Weds at the CCSO are booked. We will be looking to see if we need to move the day of the week, or which week of the month for our regular meeting.
Dave reported that Stan has reserved dates for the fly fishing classes he teaches. To enhance the value of our monthly meetings, we are looking at adding a learning workshop of some kind or another. An element of fishing skill, tackle maintenance, or fly tying, may be offered, either during the regular meeting, or perhaps 30 minutes before the meeting. If there is a skill you would like to learn, let a board member know, and we will make a list for some future clinics.
After years of generous service to the club as BBQ Master, Dave Conklin would like to reduce his responsibility. The task involves procuring, preparing, cooking, storing (food, condiments, and gear), and cleanup of our BBQ equipment and supplies. It may be a job easily divided among our members. Let Dave know if you can pick up a piece of this job. Perhaps we can have a BBQ Team on duty for our next Fishout!
A short discussion followed about building/buying a BBQ trailer. More discussion will be required.
Mike York proposed that the Club initiate a private group on Facebook. Here we could post success photos, tips, rides wanted, rides available, social fishing calendars, and any other CFFC business which we might want distributed to club members only. Let Mike know if you have ideas which could influence how this develops.
Bill Hammons described a process for dyeing fly tying materials. As examples, he brought deer hair, elk hair, saddle hackle, spay feathers, which he had dyed orange. The process was simple, successful, and permanent. He may hold a dyeing clinic, including materials, for a nominal fee.
Koop has signed on as a Trout Buddy for Reel Recovery. He’ll be helping a cancer patient on the Pleasant Valley Ranch private water (near Markleeville), on July 17, 18, and 19 this year. He volunteered on-line at Reel Recovery’s website, and was contacted by Bob Macias (our banquet speaker) to confirm the dates. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Koop for more info.

September 2011

Minutes of the Board Meeting 9/28/2011 Roll: D.Conklin, J. Koop, E. Walsh, C. Steele, E. Latour, A. Weise, P. McIlwee, R. Brehm, S. Zuber.

The Flypaper

Dave Conklin raised the topic of the November 5th banquet. It will be held again at the Gold Dust West. We will have a guest speaker, Bob Macias, from Minden, who will give a presentation about the Reel Recovery program. The program introduces cancer survivors to fly fishing, in a way intended to assure success. Bob is a professional guide on the Pleasant Valley Fly Fishing Reserve, a FFF certified casting instructor, and a professional photographer, so we expect a great presentation. The board authorized a donation to the organization.

Ticket sales are under way. Rob Brehm has lists of recent and past attendees, and has divided them among 6 volunteer callers. Be sure to make your ticket reservations early. Tickets will be available at our Wednesday meeting. If you would like to take a few tickets to sell to friends, please see Dave C. Ticket sales will be mostly by phone.

Purchasers must mail in their checks, and tickets will be held “will-call” at the banquet. It will be very difficult to accommodate sales at the door. Meals will be Chicken, Salmon, or Prime Rib. All tickets are $30 each. Please make checks payable to the Carson Fly Fishing Club (spell it out), as the bank resists accepting checks to just the initials.

The early renewal reel drawing will be held at the banquet again this year, so renew your membership for 2012 before the banquet! Koop will contact Orvis to acquire the reel.

Ernie reported that the balance in the club checking account is now about $7273.

Only two members attended the September fishout at Heenan Lake. Rob and Paul each caught big fish, but they were scarce.

Our next fishout will be on the Truckee, October 9th, yes Sunday, at the McCarran Ranch, east of Sparks. Look for an email from Koop with time and directions. This one will have a BBQ, put on by President Conklin, so don’t miss it. Last year lots of fish were caught.

Dave C brought up the topic of some of our weaker fishouts. Some fishouts (e.g. Twin Lakes or Hinkson) seem to be on good fisheries at bad times. Others are on fisheries that are just tough (Heenan? Indian Creek?). Additional discussion and input should be heard and perhaps some changes made to the fishout calendar for next year. Be sure to ask Koop how the fishing went at the One Fly Tournament!

A current roster is attached to this newsletter email. Please check your personal info, and let Craig know if there has been any change. I will send out a new revised roster after Wednesday’s meeting. You can respond to Craig from the distribution email or Carsonart65@gmail.com

Roll: D.Conklin, J. Koop, E. Walsh, C. Steele, E. Latour , P. McIlwee, MJ Van Emmerik, CK Baily

The Board selected this years recipient for the Fly Fisher of the Year award. The winner will be announced at the annual banquet. Banquet ticket sales were discussed. A draft ticket format prepared by Debbie Conklin was approved. A sales phone list will be activated by Paul McI and Rob B end of this month or early in October. Brenda (Mrs H) has been working Ebay to acquire some diverse auction items suitable for members families, not just fishermen.

The Mason Valley Wildlife Refuge sign construction project was discussed. The signs are complete in Dave’s yard, and will be installed on October 22. The club will rent an augur and set the signs in concrete. Please let Bill H or Dave C know if you can help that day.

It was called to the Board’s attention that Orvis Days are going to be October 8, 9, 15, 16. There will be opportunities to learn about approaches to local fishing waters, including Pyramid Lake.

CK Baily approached the club for support for the Carson Host Lions Kids Fishing Day. It will be held October 15th and 200-300 kids are anticipated. He is seeking volunteers to help kids with fishing tackle and methods, and financial support for prizes and awards. The Board approved a $250 donation for the prizes and agreed to support recruiting volunteer assistants.

Fishouts: September fishout will be on the 17th, at Heenan Lake (near Monitor Pass). October Fishout will be on 10/8, on the McCarran Ranch. Koop will make arrangements with the Nature Conservancy. This one will have a BBQ lunch.

We will continue the Flyfle raffle as well as the general raffle which will be the first chance to win a banquet ticket.

Fly Fisher of the Year flies are now being collected. If you tie for this, please give Stan your flies.

Banquet is at the Gold Dust West November 5th. If you would like to take a few tickets to sell to friends, please see Dave.

A new roster will be sent out after Wed’s meeting. Please make sure your contact information is current. A roster will be distributed at the meeting, or you can respond to Craig from the distribution email. Carsonart65@gmail.com

May 2011
Minutes of the Board Meeting 5/25/2011

Roll: D. Conklin, J. Koop, E Walsh, C Steele, S Zuber, , A Weise, E Latour, B Hammons, P McIlwee, R Brehm, Mike York, John and MJ VanEmmerik.

Stan Zuber again advised the Board of the Sparks Outdoor Skills programs. If you are interested in helping instruct youths in fly fishing, please contact Stan at our Weds. meeting.

Stan informed the Board that the club can obtain 5 Temple Fork Outfitters fly rods, including reels and socks, for $60 each, plus shipping. The offer is made through the Northern Calif. Chapter of Fly Fishing Federation. The board approved the purchase of 5 rods, for instructing new fishers.

Stan’s Beginning Fly Fishing Class is scheduled to start June 6th and run five nights. Seven have already registered.

The Twin Lakes Fish-out was enjoyed by seven intrepid fishermen. While the wind and low temps daunt others, but not our indefatiguable CFFC members. A few fish were taken. The Board is now considering alternate venues such as Frenchman’s for the May fish-out.

MJ reported that Lahontan is filling rapidly.

Bill Hammons reported that the season is approaching for serious shopping for banquet auction items. A few purchases have been made.

Raffle prizes for our June meeting will be purchased by Shaunna Nelson. Raffle prizes for July will be B. Hammons, August will be D. Conklin, and Sept. will be E. Walsh.

The new signboard project for MVWA will need a construction committee chairman. Bill Hammons is the lucky man. If you have signed up to help, expect a contact from Bill.

Wednesday’s program will be a DVD show offered by MJ Van Emmerik, about fly fishing in New Zealand. Expect to see some beautiful rivers and nice browns!

Don’t forget to bring two identical flies to the meeting if you want to participate in the Flyfle. Participants will get in a drawing to receive one of each of the flies deposited. The other collection of flies will be the final prize in the general raffle.

Did you get a certificate from NDOW recently? Then you must have been one of the Hinkson fishermen that reported the particulars of a tagged fish. NDOW’s certificates have the date the egg was taken, the date the fish was released, dates the fish was caught be various anglers and the size of the fish on each of those dates…. Pretty cool eh?

Our next fish-out will be June 18. Location will be determined at our meeting. Plan on attending a Tier’s Cabin at Dave’s on June 16th, and tying some Matukas.

The Board meeting was adjourned by President Conklin at 8:15 PM.

A Fishout for July may happen this year. Under consideration are Crowley, Hot Creek, Bridgeport Reservoir, Indian Creek again, or Hobart. We set the July fishout for the 23rd. We’ll assess the conditions and make the final decision in June and announce it at the annual family BBQ.

Speaker for our next meeting has not yet been determined. Be prepared to be surprised.

If you usually receive the flypaper via snail-mail, then you will receive the form along with regular club mailings. Please be sure to get this back to a board member.

We have another request and that is for an emergency contact phone number list for the club. This would be in case something happens during a fishout so that someone can be contacted. MARCH BOARD MEETING 3/30/2011
Minutes of the Board Meeting 3/30/2011
Roll: D. Conklin, J. Koop, E Walsh, C Steele, S Zuber, A Weise, E Latour, B Hammons, P McIlwee, R Brehm, Mike York.
Old Business- President Dave brought up the club project suggested by Bill Hammons. The Board decided to move forward with the project, and approved construction of four signboards for the Mason Valley Wildlife Area fishing ponds. Two will be constructed initially, and two more with any design enhancements. We will install signboards at Hinkson, Crappy, Churchill and Bass Ponds. We may also cut off and reinstall the sign at the North Pond.
Ernie indicates a Tribal decision may be forthcoming to open the nets through the remainder of the year. Keep your ear to the ground on this one.
Pyramid Lake Fishout. – Five intrepid members showed up March 19th. Fish were caught, though the morning was slow. All enjoyed hot-dogs and beans prepared by Chef Conklin, potato salad, and home made scratch chocolate cake prepared by Sous Chef York.
The Board approved a $100 contribution to the Carson Valley Kids Fishing Derby. They can use volunteers to help the kids, or staff a table.
Fishouts: We confirmed that the April Fishout will be held at Indian Creek Reservoir on April 16th. May’s Fishout will be at Lower Twin Lakes on the weekend of the 21st. Reserve your campsite now! June’s Fishout could be a little iffy. We selected Lake Davis as first choice, with Frenchmans or Spooner as contingency venues. A Fishout for July may happen this year. Under consideration are Crowley, Hot Creek, Bridgeport Reservoir, Indian Creek again, or Hobart. We set the July fishout for the 23rd. We’ll assess the conditions and make the final decision in June and announce it at the annual Conklin BBQ.
Speakers for our next meeting will be Don and Liz Weirauch, fishing guides and proprietors of the Angler’s Edge fly shop. They’ll be doing a great presentation on fishing techniques for Saddleback, Twin Lakes, and the East Walker. Don’t miss this presentation by local experts!

New New New--- the Flyfle. That is a fly raffle, for those who weren’t at the last meeting. All those who want to participate will bring two favorite and identical flies. One will go in one can for the general raffle. And the second will go in the contributors only raffle. Contributors only will each receive a raffle ticket when they deposit their two flies. Flies should have a tag identifying them and where they’ll work best. During the meeting, one ticket will be drawn and the lucky contributor will get all the flies in the contributor drawing. One lucky member will also get a copy of all the flies when his number is called during the general raffle. Bring a matched pair of your favorite flies.
The Club received an invitation to participate in the Cabela’s Fly Fishing Weekend. It will be held April 16-17 in Reno. No official attendance is planned.
The club received a very generous offer from a club member to sell us some new equipment at a substantially discounted price. It was observed however that if the club makes Club owned equipment available to members, our insurance (which is currently quite reasonable) would become much more costly. Perhaps we can find another way for club members to sell, trade, barter, gift, good working fishing gear to other members?
The club also received an invitation to participate in the opener party at the Fly Shop in Redding. It will be held April 29 this year if any member is interested in attending.
Next Meeting will be at the Sheriff’s Office on Musser. Our May meeting will be at our favorite alternate location, the Stewart St Fire Station.
The Board meeting was adjourned by President Conklin at 8:35 PM.

February 2011
Minutes of the Board Meeting 2/23/2011

Roll: D. Conklin, J. Koop, E Walsh, C Steele, S Zuber, , J Baily, CK Baily, A Weise, E Latour, B Hammons, P McIlwee, R Brehm, D Leatherman, Mike York.

Old Business- The Board approved the 2011 Bylaw revision. The Secretary was directed to forward the bylaws to the general membership for final approval at the March 2nd club meeting. Come to the next meeting and vote on the bylaws!

2011 Banquet. Dave Conklin reported that he has opened the banquet discussion with Gold Dust West, the venue is booked, and GDW is committed to making this our best banquet ever.

Next Meeting will be at the CC Fire Station on Stewart Street, just south of 5th Street. Note: the May meeting will also be there….. (but not April) all other meetings will continue at the Sheriff’s Office.

New Business. CK updated the Board on the fall Kids Fishing Day at the Baily pond. The CC Lions Club and CC Parks and Rec Dept will co-host the event. Another fishing day is being planned by an Eagle Scout candidate, for single parents. Stay.tuned for more info, and possible opportunities to volunteer.

Bill Hammons has spoken with Chris Vasey of NDOW about potential club contributions. Instead of grass carp, one suggestion was to renew or construct some sign boards for the Mason Valley Wildlife Refuge. Bill estimates the cost of each sign to be $200 for materials, and labor, foundation excavation, etc would add a bit more. MVWMA could use up to 5 signs, Craig volunteered to talk with Mark Warren of NDOW to see if there might be other projects which NDOW would like to fund, or which we might consider when deciding how to invest our funds.

Koop re-raised the issue of the FFF Certificated Fly Casting Instructor. Discussion ensued, and the Board decided to remove the limit of two individuals that could be reimbursed. We have two individuals already contemplating attempting this certification and there are several potential benefits to having instructors in our club. Within limits, our club members could receive free instruction. Certain training events could be hosted. Membership in the CFFC might be more prestigious, and more persons may desire to join the club. As reported last month, the club’s reimbursement to our new instructors will be for tuition and lodging only, and is paid only after the candidate receives his/her certificate. This looks like a sure bet!

Dave Conklin announced the upcoming speaker schedule. At our March meeting, Jay Clark, a northern California guide service, will present a power point covering still water, moving water, and Lake Davis. He is also known to fish Pyramid, so come prepared with your questions.

For the April meeting we will have Don and Liz, guides, and owners of Angler’s Edge in Gardnerville.

The Board meeting was adjourned by President Conklin at 8:15 PM.

January 2011
2011 Banquet. The Board discussed the pros and cons of relocating the banquet to a new venue. Gold Dust West and the CC Nugget have both offered attractive proposals. The Board selected Gold Dust West to host our November 2011 Banquet. Next Meeting will be at the CC Fire Station on Stewart Street, just south of 5th Street. Note: the March and May meetings will also be there….. (but not April) all other meetings will continue at the Sheriff’s Office. The board decided to pursue completion of an update of our by-laws. Koop, Walsh Steele, York (and other volunteers) will prepare a next draft for distribution one week prior to our next board meeting. We hope to bring the final draft to the March general meeting for approval by the membership. Gil Yanuck has requested CFFC support for the Friends of Nevada Wildlife Legislative Breakfast. It is a free breakfast Thursday, February 17th, for legislators and the public, and an opportunity to discuss our desires with legislators. It’s in RM 3100 of the Legislative Bldg. The Board approved a $100 contribution for this purpose. CK updated the Board on the fall Kids Fishing Day at the Baily pond. It looks like the CC Lions Club will take the lead. An underwriter has been found who will contribute annually to support the event. Raffle Prize procurement duties were settled for February and March. Stan informed the Board of the Boy Scouts’ merit badge fair to be held March 19th and April 9th, from 8am till 5 pm, at the Morman Stake House on Saliman, just south of the High School. Lessons and testing for a fly fishing merit badge will occur. Sessions will run about 1 ½ hours each. More information will be forthcoming. Perhaps CFFC can assist. See this link for the requirements: http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/BoyScouts/AdvancementandAwards/MeritBadges/mb-FLYF.aspx Stan suggested that the Club, when the monthly FFF News Magazine is distributed by email, explore putting it on the website for members to be able to read. Further information will be required. Stan reported that the eggs for the Trout in the Classroom program will be distributed to classes on February 9th. Bill had two suggestions for the Board. First, should the Board seek to acquire silent auction items which would appeal to females and families who attend our banquet. The Board decided this was a good idea and authorized Brenda Hammons to acquire general interest items where reasonable profits may be expected. The board authorized $200 for the purchase of these items.

The second suggestion was for the club to acquire two float tubes to rent to those who might wish to try one out before making the purchase. There was some discussion about the Loaner Bank which currently makes some equipment available, and it was determined that further study would be necessary before making this investment.

Jackie discussed the possibility that the Club could staff a regular coaching day at the Baily pond. She also suggested that the Club consider a long term sponsorship worthy of our energies and contributions. Should the Club adopt a beneficiary organization? Koop suggested that the general membership might benefit if the CFFC had its own FFF certified Fly Casting Instructors. It costs $150 to become certified, and $45 per year for renewals. Koop proposed that the Club reimburse any successful FFF Instructor for the certification fee and the accommodation expense in acquiring it. (Travel expense and meals would not be reimbursed). The Instructor would then have duties to the club, such as clinics at meetings, or assistance at clinics. The Board approved this proposal. The Board meeting was adjourned by President Conklin at 9:00 PM.
